Networking is the bane of a lot of people’s existences. It is, however, one of the most important things to do for employees and prospective employees alike. Networking is done by all manner of people, from students looking for jobs to top executives looking to make business deals. It is often daunting to go into a room full of strangers for the sole purpose of meeting new people and making friends. Moreover, it is the most critical part of this exercise called networking, making new friends.
Compiled below is a list of a few tips to help people understand how to network
Mindset Making friends is the most critical part of networking, and therefore, one should have a proper mindset for the job. Many people try to work the room by talking with as many people as possible. However, this is not effective. Many short conversations with an exchange of business cards are forgotten in lieu of more exciting conversations and deep connections made with the few. These exciting and deep connections often transform into friendships and are a hallmark of successful networking.
Show that you are listening When joining in on a conversation, show that you have been listening by adding to the discussion. That would imply either offering a supporting viewpoint or an opposing viewpoint. Doing this brings the focus on you and allows connections to develop. Never try to steer the conversation towards you & your achievement; it tends to make others lose interest and is not recommended.
Meet the Organiser An unexpected and underutilised tip is to meet the organiser. Networking with the organiser allows you to be invited to more events and will enable you to understand more about who is in the room. This allows the organiser to introduce you to essential figures and renown guests present for the networking events.
Bring a Friend Bringing a friend along allows them to introduce you to people they are talking to and vice versa. Having an easy in into a conversation at a networking event is very valuable as it can easily lead to successful networking.
These are some of the best tips for networking that I have come across or utilised, so keep them in mind before attending the next networking event!
